Dr. Seter has served on the faculties of the Peabody Conservatory, George Washington University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and The American University of Washington DC. She is currently affiliated with the Jewish Music Research Centre, Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dr. Seter contributed 12 entries in the Grove Music Online and the New Grove Dictionary of American Music, and has published in Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, Encyclopedia Judaica, Notes, the Journal of the American Musicological Society and the Musical Quarterly. Two of her presentations on Israeli music are available as webcasts on the Library of Congress website. Seter received her Ph.D. at Cornell University in 2004 and she is co-founder of the AMS study group Jewish Studies and Music.

Her presentation will explore the music of Israel, and how it has been affected and changed in the last 100 years. In her words: ‘The music of Israel is a unique combination of Jewish and non-Jewish traditions that have come together over the course of a century to create a distinctive musical culture. Immigrants from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and elsewhere brought with them their musical traditions, melding and molding them into a new Israeli sound that helped define the emerging national spirit.”

This presentation will be free and open to the public.
